What a polygraph is and why it is used in the Netherlands

A polygraph — commonly called a lie detector — is a measuring instrument that simultaneously records several involuntary physiological reactions to assess the truthfulness of a person answering specific questions. In the Netherlands, with its strong economy, large finance and logistics sectors and highly international community, demand for private polygraph testing has grown steadily: people turn to it when they need an objective answer and official procedures are too slow or inapplicable.

How the test procedure works step by step

The test takes place in a session usually lasting 1.5 to 3 hours, divided into several phases. The first is the pre-test interview, where the examiner explains how the device works, studies the case, assesses the examinee's health and rules out contraindications. This phase is key: it builds trust, lowers situational stress and serves to jointly formulate the relevant questions that will be asked during the test.

Recording then follows. Using non-invasive sensors on the chest, abdomen, fingers and arm, the polygraph continuously records several channels: cardiovascular activity, breathing rhythm and skin conductance. These parameters, governed by the autonomic nervous system, escape conscious control and react involuntarily to the tension that accompanies a deceptive answer.

The most common method is the Comparison Question Test (CQT), recognised worldwide. It alternates relevant questions about the case with comparison questions that generate a reference reaction. Comparing both types of reaction lets the examiner reach a well-founded conclusion about the examinee's truthfulness.

How to prepare for the test

No special preparation is needed — only clear physiological signals matter. It helps to sleep well the night before, eat normally, take your regular medication and tell the examiner about it, avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours and limit strong coffee before the test. Nervousness does not lead to a "fail" — the calibration phase accounts for the natural level of tension. We do not recommend internet "tricks": a certified examiner recognises them as obvious artefacts in the recording.

Test accuracy and whether the polygraph can be fooled

The accuracy of a professional test is 95–98% with a certified examiner and computerised equipment. High reliability comes from measuring several independent parameters at once — one reaction can be controlled, but not all of them together. Attempts at manipulation, such as controlled breathing or muscle tensing, are recognised by an experienced expert as atypical patterns. Tests are not conducted on people who are intoxicated, in late pregnancy or with serious cardiovascular disease — in such cases the examiner will honestly decline or suggest another date.

The polygraph and the law in the Netherlands

In the Dutch legal system a polygraph result does not have the status of automatic evidence, and courts treat it cautiously. This does not remove its practical value, though: the polygraph is most often used out of court — to clear up a personal or family conflict, support a party's position in negotiations, guide an internal company investigation or prepare arguments before turning to official bodies. The test is always voluntary and carried out with written consent, and data is processed in line with the European GDPR.

Polygraph, variograph or lie detector — are they the same

The words "polygraph", "lie detector" and "variograph" are used interchangeably — rightly so, because they refer to one device and one method. "Polygraph" is of Greek origin ("many-writing"), "lie detector" is the everyday name of the function, and "variograph" is a variant common in some countries. Whichever term you use, in the Netherlands you receive the same professional service on certified equipment.

The most common personal reason is suspicion of infidelity; in such cases the test gives a clear answer and ends months of guessing. Myth: the device "reads minds" — it only records involuntary physiological reactions, which the specialist interprets. Myth: the test is painful — it is entirely painless and non-invasive, the sensors only read data. Myth: the result means nothing — when conducted properly, accuracy reaches 95–98%, and the report is used as supporting material.

What the polygraph does not test — the method's honest limits

A professional approach means being aware of the limits. The polygraph does not answer abstract questions or ones about a distant past a person may not remember. It works best with specific, verifiable events (for example, "Did you take that sum from the till?"), not with judgements or future intentions. Tests are also not conducted on people whose health could distort the recording. We state these limits honestly before the test — which is why the result you receive is genuinely reliable.

What to expect from the session — practical tips for the examinee

If you are taking a polygraph test for the first time, arrive rested, without alcohol or stimulants the night before, and with time to spare so you are not rushed. The examiner will meet you calmly, explain the procedure in detail in a comfortable language, answer all your questions and ask you to sign informed consent before recording begins. There are no trick questions: relevant questions are agreed in advance and worded exactly as you agreed. During recording you sit comfortably, with sensors attached non-invasively, and answer only "yes" or "no".

Confidentiality and data protection (GDPR)

Discretion matters to us as much as methodological rigour. Meetings are by prior appointment only, so you will not meet other clients at the office. All information about the case and the result are confidential and go to the client alone, and data processing complies with the European GDPR.
